![]() Indeed, at the very lowest levels, and here I mean company and below, the primary function is to lead. The balance between the leadership and command functions will vary according to the phase of an operation or campaign, the level, or size, of the command being exercised, national doctrine and the means available for information flow.Īt the lower, tactical levels of command, and here we generally accept divisional level as the top end, commanders are able, and in many cases required, to have direct involvement in the battle. Command is more of a management function, requiring a systems approach, and thus the exercise of command includes the process by which a commander makes decisions and impresses his will on, and transmits his intentions to, his subordinates. Leadership tends to be defined in terms of the qualities a leader ought to posses in order to motivate and inspire, his presence, personality and character. The dilemma stems from the demands on his time from the functions that all commanders are required to perform: leadership and command. Once plans are made, orders given and battle begins, one of the greatest dilemmas facing the commander is where best to position himself so as to be able to exert influence over the outcome. ‘The most suitable position of the commander is that point where he can best influence the progress of the campaign, major operation or battle by making timely decisions appropriate to his level of command.’ 1 ![]()
